The Frit-uation

Ever heard of frit before? (Neither had I, until about two weeks ago…)

Frit – a ceramic composition that has been fused in a special fusing oven, quenched to form a glass, and granulated. Frits are indispensable constituents of most industrial ceramic glazes. (Wikipedia)

My project in Vietnam is to work with the Hue Frit Joint-Stock Company to assess, analyze, and provide recommendations to 1) improve production management of frit, 2) discover ways to lower the company’s production costs, and 3) implement a more positive corporate culture for managers and workers alike. Our client is producing frit at a lower than expected capacity and it’s our job to try to understand why! In the next two weeks, we will be building our project plan for the assessment and learning as much as we can about this material to hit the ground running.

Of course, not only are we both unfamiliar with the production of frit, we will also have to be cognizant of the language barrier and cultural differences in Vietnam. Luckily, we have been assigned a translator who will assist us in translating all of our presentations and documents into Vietnamese, and vice versa. Additionally, we have both been taking numerous classes and reading up on the Vietnamese business culture to understand how to effectively present and collaborate with our client team. All we know right now though is that we are both very excited to start our project!

Why Vietnam?

First post. Accomplishment.

So why the blog? It has been highly recommended that I maintain a blog to refer back to about my month in Vietnam. I had purchased this domain name (like a geek) a while ago and just hadn’t figured out what to do with it yet. Sometimes I get excited about trying to start a blog, other times, the thought of keeping up and writing every day sounds daunting… Regardless, what better way to begin than using this trip as a springboard?

Vietnam 10 – IBM Corporate Service Corps (CSC)- What is it?

“The Corporate Service Corps was launched in 2008 to help provide IBMers with high quality leadership development while delivering high quality problem solving for communities and organizations in emerging markets. The program empowers IBM employees as global citizens by sending groups of 10 – 15 individuals from different countries with a range of skills to an emerging market for four week community-based assignments. During the assignment, participants perform community-driven economic development projects working at the intersection of business, technology, and society.”

As part of this program, I will be joining the Vietnam 10 trip in Huế during May 2013. More info to come on the details of our project…in the meantime, more info is available at this link: http://www.ibm.com/ibm/responsibility/corporateservicecorps/wwa_vietnam.html
